In John 18:38, while interrogating Jesus, Pilate asked, “What is truth?” I wonder why Pilate asked this question to the Lord. Regardless, this is still a relevant question.

We currently live in a society where there are virtually no absolutes (especially no moral and religious absolutes). Haven’t you noticed that?

Jesus taught that religious and moral truth exists and can be found in His word (John 1:17; 4:24; 16:13; 8:32, 45; 14:6; 17:17).

Consider five truths that we need to know about the truth.

It is absolute.

  • This is true of the facts of mathematics. This is true of water always freezing at thirty-two degrees Fahrenheit, and boiling at 212 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • This is also true of God’s word (John 17:17; 1 Peter 1:22-25). God’s word is enduring and concrete. It is the same yesterday, today, and forever!

It is independent.

  • It is not dependent on us believing it to be true.
  • No matter how much we quibble or argue about God’s word, it is true.
  • John 14:6 is true whether we believe it or not. This can also be about passages like Mark 16:16, Matthew 19:9, 1 Timothy 2:11-12, and 1 Corinthians 6:9-11.

It can be known.

  • God wants us to know the truth (John 8:31-32).
  • Paul says that we can understand the truth (Ephesians 3:4; 1 Timothy 2:4).
  • The people in Berea searched diligently for the truth and were blessed (Acts 17:11-12).
  • When dealing with the issue of Gentile salvation, the brethren came together in Jerusalem and discovered the truth (Acts 15:1-35).

It provokes responses.

  • Some harden their hearts (Exodus 8:15, 32).
  • Some feel grief (Mark 10:22).
  • Some get offended (Matthew 15:12),
  • Some receive it with joy (Acts 13:42).
  • Some are convicted (Acts 2:37).
  • Each person has to choose how they will respond to the truth!

It is Jesus!

  • Jesus is unchangeable (Hebrews 13:8).
  • While on the earth, He embodied truth (John 14:6).
  • He came to reveal the truth (John 1:17).
  • His truth will judge on the last day (John 12:48).

Conclusion: The truth is also liberating (John 8:31-32)! Have you been set free from your sins by it?
