Unfortunately, for many Christians, they walk around with an identity crisis. For many Christians, they view themselves in the most negative possible way. They think, “I am a wretched, terrible sinner, who God has never been pleased with and will never be pleased with.” Could that describe you? If you’re a Christian, do you know who you really are? Is your definition based on what God has revealed in His word?
Consider four things in regard to how God views His people.
Light
- We are the light of the world (Matthew 5:16).
- Being light requires that we shine. Our lives should stand out and be noticeable to the world.
- Being light requires that we guide. We are to help those living in darkness find their way to the Lord.
- Being light requires that we draw. Insects are drawn to light. Likewise, our righteous lives should draw the lost to the Lord.
- Being God’s light in this dark and sinful world means that we are immensely important to the Lord!
A New Creature
- This happened as soon as we were baptized (Romans 6:3-7; John 3:5).
- This means that we were given a new identity.
- This means that we were given new hearts (Ephesians 4:22-24; 1 Timothy 1:12-16).
- This doesn’t mean that we don’t sin from time to time (1 John 1:8-10).
- It means that we no longer actively pursue a life of sin.
- It means that we are truly changed people now that we have given our lives to the Lord.
A Saint
- We became this immediately when we were baptized (Acts 26:10; 1 Corinthians 1:2; 2 Corinthians 1:1; Philippians 1:1; Ephesians 4:12).
- We are holy (1 Peter 2:9).
- We are forgiven (1 Corinthians 6:9-11; 1:2).
- We have been given great responsibilities (1 Peter 1:16; Matthew 5:16; 2 Corinthians 7:1).
- We are holy and sanctified unto the Lord!
A Child of God
- We are children of God (1 John 3:1; Galatians 3:26)!
- God is our Father.
- We have brothers and sisters in Christ.
- We are fellow heirs with Christ (Romans 8:16-17; 1 Peter 1:3-5).
- This is how important we are to God!
Conclusion: Do these things describe you? If not, come to the Lord right now!
