How does the Holy Spirit work in the lives of God’s people today? Does He lead us to certain people and places? Does He speak to us directly? Does He still give believers the ability to perform miracles?

Sadly, many people are confused and believe myths about the work of the Holy Spirit. So, let’s study what the Scriptures teach about the work of the Spirit in the past and present.

What work has the Holy Spirit done?

  • The Holy Spirit has done the work of revelation. He revealed the will of God to the Old Testament prophets (2 Peter 1:20-21). He also revealed the will of God to the New Testament apostles and prophets (John 16:12-15; Ephesians 3:3-5; 1 Corinthians 2:10-13). The Holy Spirit delivered everything in the Bible!
  • The Holy Spirit has also done the work of confirmation. God doesn’t want us to possess blind faith when it comes to believing in the inspiration of the Scriptures. In addition to revealing the complete will of God to inspired men, the Holy Spirit also enabled them to perform miracles to confirm that their message was from God (Mark 16:15-20; Hebrews 2:1-4; 1 Corinthians 2:4).
  • The works of revelation and confirmation are both finished work! There is no new revelation given by the Holy Spirit today (John 16:13; Jude 3; 2 Peter 1:3.
  • When God’s word was fully revealed, the miracles that confirmed it would cease (1 Corinthians 13:8-10).
  • Anyone who claims to be receiving new revelation from God is a fraud. We have all that God wants us to know in the Bible!

What work is the Holy Spirit doing?

  • He convicts (Hebrews 4:12; John 16:7-8; Acts 2:37). The revealed word exposes and convicts us of sins in our lives.
  • He converts (John 3:5). When we believe the Holy Spirit’s inspired word, we are  “born again” of the Spirit (1 Peter 1:23-25). We are purified and saved through the words of the Spirit.
  • He sanctifies (John 17:17). Through the Spirit’s word, we are made holy and set apart for God’s purpose. We are cleansed and made priests and children of God.
  • He leads (Galatians 5:16-25; 2 Timothy 3:16-17). The Holy Spirit influences, walks with, abides in, and produces fruit in us through the word. We are equipped to be everything God wants us to be.
  • He intercedes (Romans 8:26-27). When we are struggling with knowing what to say when we pray, the Holy Spirit helps us. He searches our hearts and makes our petitions acceptable to God.

Conclusion:

Have you submitted to the Holy Spirit’s revealed plan of salvation?
