Our culture’s feelings about homosexuality have changed swiftly over the past few years. Today, in all 50 states, homosexual couples can legally marry. The majority of Americans support this. Those in the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) community are very confident right now.

Why do Christians have such a problem with homosexuality and gay marriage?

What the problem is not:

  • While those who advocate homosexuality have tried to redefine marriage, Christians are only trying to promote this relationship as God intended (Matthew 19:3-6).
  • There is no scientific evidence that suggests that people are born with an inability to control their passions and sexual desire (Galatians 5:22-25).
  • Those who advocate homosexuality want us to tolerate this agenda, but they are unwilling to accept our beliefs. The push for tolerance is very one-sided!
  • The teachings of Jesus. While Jesus never used the words “homosexual” or “gay marriage” in His ministry, He did teach the will of God for marriage (Matthew 19:3-9). He also condemned this sexual sin through his apostles’ inspired teachings (John 16:12-15).
  • We are to serve one another (Galatians 5:13).
  • This requires us to get to know each other, trust one another, and genuinely caring for one another.

What the problem is:

  • Homosexual activity is a violation of the moral standard of God.
  • God is the Creator (Genesis 1:26-27). This gives Him the inherent right to set the standard for morality.
  • Homosexual activity doesn’t honor and glorify God. It is a sin against Him (Romans 1:18-32; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10).

How should we respond?

  • We need to love everyone (John 3:16). We need to love sinners and hate sin. Jesus treated every sinner with love, kindness, and compassion (Mark 2:14-16). Do we?
  • We need to teach (Luke 19:10; Mark 16:15). Jesus showed love towards people in sexual sin by teaching them the gospel (John 4:7-27). Do we?
  • We need to remember that people caught up in sexual sin can change (1 Corinthians 6:11). The gospel has the power to convert any person. We need to have the courage and love to teach it.

Conclusion:

Are you submitting to the moral standard of the Creator?
