In keeping with our theme of “experiencing the fullness of Christ,” in this lesson, we will study the character of Jesus. We will carefully consider some qualities about His character that get overlooked.

As we dig deep into what the gospel tells about the “real Jesus,” we will be challenged. We may even start to feel uncomfortable (because some of the things revealed in the gospel about Jesus may go entirely against the images we have formed in our minds).

The real Jesus was One who became angry.

  • Jesus got angry because of the hardness of heart in His enemies (Mark 3:5).
  • Sin also angered Jesus (John 2:13-17; Matthew 21:13).
  • Like Jesus, do we also get outraged when we observe the promotion of sin? Like Jesus, does our righteous anger drive us to action?

The real Jesus was One who grieved.

  • He grieved with those who were grieving (John 11:35).
  • He lamented when people rejected Him and were on a path to receive God’s judgment (Luke 19:41-44).
  • Like Jesus, do we also “weep with those who weep” (Romans 12:15)? Like Jesus, do we also grieve in our hearts when we witness the lost reject God’s will?

The real Jesus was One who associated with sinners.

  • Jesus associated with the “outcasts” of His day (Mark 2:14-17). The Pharisees criticized the Lord for doing this.
  • Jesus associated with sinners because He was the great spiritual physician. Only He could remedy their sin problem!
  • Like Jesus, we need to continually be aware of the spiritual condition of those around us. We must never shy away from helping them find their way to the great physician.

The real Jesus was One who lived as a servant.

  • Jesus left the glories of heaven to serve us at the highest level (Luke 19:10; Mark 10:41-45). The Lord died on the cross for our sins!
  • He has also called us to be servants (John 13:14; Philippians 2:3-5). We are to serve Him and one another.

Conclusion:

Are you currently serving the real Jesus?
