Moses is one of the greatest leaders in Scripture. God used him to lead Israel from hundreds of years of slavery. He wrote the first five books of the Bible. He also led the nation to the border of the Promised Land.

Moses was a great man of God. But there would not have been a Moses without his mother.

Moses’ mother is often overlooked. Her name was Jochebed. She is mentioned by name only twice in the Bible (Exodus 6:20; Numbers 26:59). But she is still essential to the Bible story.

Consider what life was like for the mother of Moses.

She lived in a dangerous time.

  • Jochebed brought Moses into the world during a time of slavery (Exodus 1:6-14).
  • To control the Hebrew population (since they were experiencing tremendous growth), the Egyptians made them slaves. But the more they oppressed God’s people, the more they increased in number!
  • Once the Pharaoh realized his slavery plan was not working, he decided to kill all the newborn Hebrew male babies. The Hebrew midwives refused to execute this plan (Exodus 1:15-21). The king then decided to have the babies thrown into the Nile (Exodus 1:22-2:2).
  • While the situation may not be as difficult, mothers today continue to bring children into a dangerous world. They bring them into a world where they will be mocked for following Jesus and pressured to become atheists and engage in all forms of immorality.

She lived a life of sacrifice.

  • Jochebed went against the law of the land to protect her baby (Exodus 2:2). She risked her life hiding Moses for three months. When she could hide him no longer, she then executed another plan to save his life (Exodus 2:2-4).
  • There are few people on earth more selfless and sacrificial than a mother!
  • Mothers sacrifice their bodies, bringing children into the world. They sacrifice time, energy, and many other things to help their children survive in this world.

She lived a life of faith.

  • Faith played a huge role in Jochebed’s decision to save Moses (Hebrews 11:23).
  • God blessed Jochebed for her faith (Exodus 2:5-10).
  • Pharaoh’s daughter found her baby and had mercy.
  • Through God’s providence, Jochebed was blessed to nurse, raise, and teach Moses about God.
  • Are you thankful for the mother of faith that God has given you?

Conclusion:

May God bless all of the godly and righteous mothers!
