Beginning Wednesday, we will embark on a series of studies about the miracles of Jesus. These studies will strengthen our faith and equip us to teach others about Jesus.

As we prepare for these studies, let’s consider six powerful facts about the miracles of Jesus.

They are a core aspect of the gospel.

  • One cannot expect to accept Jesus apart from His miracles. The miracles performed are just as important as His death, burial, and resurrection!
  • A “miracle” is an act that is not in harmony with the natural laws of nature. They are, in fact, supernatural acts. They are things that cannot be done without the direct intervention of God.

They confirm His identity.

  • Jesus performed miracles to provide supernatural evidence to back up His supernatural claims (Matthew 9:1-8; John 3:2; 20:30-31).
  • Without the miracles, we have no legitimate reason for believing in Jesus (John 10:37-38).

They give great insight into His heart.

  • They were a demonstration of compassion, grace, and mercy towards others’ sufferings (Mark 2:40-43; 8:1-3; Luke 7:11-15; 17:11-14).
  • Jesus did not perform miracles to exploit people for money or to boast about His great power. The motives for His miracles were pure, righteous, and noble.

They were instant and recognizable.

  • People knew Jesus was performing real legitimate miracles.
  • The miracles were instant (Mark 1:30-31, 40-42; 2:12; Luke 22:50-51).
  • They were not done in secret but in public (Acts 2:22).
  • They could not even be denied by Jesus’ enemies (Matthew 12:22-24).

They did not always involve faith.

  • That is, Jesus’ miracles did not always involve people having faith beforehand in Him as the Messiah and Son of God (Mark 5:35-43; Luke 7:11-17; John 11:43-44; John 9:1-12, 35-38; Luke 22:50-51).
  • This is much different than what modern “fake healers” promote today!

They should have a powerful impact on our lives.

  • They should impact and strengthen our faith in Jesus.
  • They should give us confidence that Jesus has the power to help us with the storms that pop up in our lives.
  • They should assure us that Christianity is the true religion and every other religion is false!

Conclusion:

Are you allowing the supernatural power of Jesus to lead you to faithful service to God?
