The purpose of the life of a disciple is to be like Jesus. It is to follow in His footsteps. Probably the most significant thing that can be said about Jesus’ life is that He was a servant (Mark 10:42-45).  He calls us to be servants as well (John 13:12-17). Are we doing that?

Jesus is the perfect model of a servant because He possessed three critical things.

Awareness

  • The disciples had a need (John 13:5-6). They needed their feet washed. This work was usually reserved for the lowest servant in the house.
  • Jesus was fully aware of this need, and He did the work of a lowly servant.
  • The mentality runs counter to our culture. Most folks in 21st century America live their lives solely focused on their own needs and desire. Few are willing to consider the needs of those around them.
  • God calls His people to be different (Philippians 2:3-4)!

Compassion

  • Compassion requires sympathy, pity, and concern for the sufferings and problems of others.
  • Jesus speaks of a slave who had no compassion for this fellow slave in Matthew 18:21-35).
  • Jesus demonstrated compassion for people throughout His ministry (Matthew 9:36; 14:14; 20:34; Luke 7:13; Mark 8:2).
  • This is a quality that the Lord also expects us to possess (Romans 12:15).

Action

  • Jesus took action to help His disciples with their problem (John 13:5). He used water, a basin, and a towel, and washed their feet!
  • Mary also used what she had to serve Jesus (Mark 14:1-11). The Lord was pleased with her service. He wanted believers to remember it forever!
  • Are we like Jesus and Mary? Do we step up and do something to help those in need? Do we use the resources available to make the lives of others better?
  • Do we have eyes that are aware of peoples’ needs? Do we have hearts full of compassion? Do we have hands and feet that are willing to render service?

Conclusion: Jesus served us in the most significant way at Calvary (Mark 10:45). Are you serving Him?
