In two days, the 2020 election will finally be over! Who do you think will win? More importantly, how will you behave and treat others once it is over?

Let’s be honest about it; many of us are very emotional and passionate about this election. We are worried about it. We want Tuesday to go our way. This is obvious when you look at what disciples are posting on social media sites. For many, they are using social media as a venue to promote a particular candidate and argue with others over the opposition. The devil is certainly aware of how emotional many of us are over this election, and he will try to use this to divide and conquer us.

With that in mind, let’s spend a few moments emphasizing some important words that we need to remember as the day approaches when we will be electing new leaders.

Unity

  • The unity we have as God’s people is fragile. If we are not careful, our attitude towards the outcome of the election can divide us as the family of God.
  • As Christians, we are part of something much bigger than politics. We are part of a royal priesthood and holy nation (1 Peter 2:9-10). We are members of the one body of Christ (Ephesians 4:1-6).
  • Jesus prayed for us always to be united as His people (John 17:20-21). Paul urged us to work hard at maintaining unity (Ephesians 4:3; 1 Corinthians 1:10).
  • Regardless of what happens Tuesday, we need to avoid Satan’s effort to divide us over politics.

Influence

  • Every disciple has influence with someone. Many of these folks are connected to us on social media!
  • It sends a bad message to the world when God’s people debate politics on social media (Matthew 5:16; John 17:21). It doesn’t motivate them to desire to share in the blessings of Christ with us.
  • Instead of debating politics on social media, we should show restraint and make better use of our time (Proverbs 17:14, 27-28; Ephesians 5:15-17). While it is not wrong to have political disagreements, debating politics on social media can damage our influence with those we should be trying to reach with the gospel.

Control

  • Regardless of who wins the election, God is still in control! (Psalm 47:8; 113:4-5; Matthew 28:18-20; Revelation 17:14; 19:6). Remembering this will help you sleep well Tuesday night regardless of the outcome.
  • God’s kingdom will always prevail. It will be victorious. It will last forever!
  • Let’s always put our trust in God and remain faithful citizens in His kingdom!

Conclusion:

As Tuesday approaches, where is your trust?
