There are people here this morning for a variety of different reasons. Some may be here because someone made them. Some may be here simply out of a sense of obligation. Some are here for the right reason – to worship and give praise to God!

God is worthy of our worship. In fact, He is worthy of our best effort in worship. He is worthy of reverence and respect in our worship (Psalm 89:7).

Why is God worthy of reverence in the assembly?

  • Because of who He is
    • He is our Creator (Genesis 1:1, 26-27).
    • He is sovereign (Psalm 135:6; Matthew 28:18).
    • He is perfectly holy (Psalm 99:9).
    • He is perfectly righteous (Psalm 145:17).
  • Because of where He is
    • He is in our presence when we worship.
    • He is in communion with us when we partake of the Lord’s Supper (Matthew 26:26-29).
    • He is with us when we sing (Hebrews 2:11-12).
  • Because of what He has done
    • He has provided for our physical needs (Psalm 145:15-16).
    • He has provided for our spiritual needs through His Son (Romans 5:8-10).

How do we show reverence for God in the assembly?

  • We show this by preparing before we arrive at the assembly.
    • We need to get a good night’s sleep on Saturday night.
    • We need to be alert and sober-minded.
  • We show this by putting our hearts in our worship (John 4:24).
    • We have to do this in our singing (Colossians 3:16).
    • We have to do this in our eating of the Lord’s Supper (1 Corinthians 11:23-29).
    • We have to do this in our hearing preaching from God’s word (Nehemiah 8:2-3).
    • We have to do this in our prayers (Acts 2:42; 12:5).
    • We have to do this in our giving (2 Corinthians 9:7).
  • We show this when we (men) lead in an act of worship to God.
  • We show this by giving our best in the way that we dress.
  • We show this by doing our best to be on time each Lord’s Day.

Conclusion: God doesn’t just deserve reverence in our worship assemblies, but also in our daily lives!
