(Ephesians 5:15-17)

In the verses above, Paul has some things to say about how we use our time. We are to be wise with it. We are to make the most of it. We are to use it to do the will of God. When a person comes to Christ, they make a decision to give Jesus the ultimate say in what they choose to do with their time.

What is time? Time is precious and fleeting. It is valuable. Unfortunately, it is often wasted. It is expected to be used to achieve some very specific things each day.

How do we make the most of our time?

By making time to be alone with God (TAG)

  • If we are not careful we can neglect doing this.
    • We can’t neglect daily Bible reading (Psalm 119:9-11, 50, 100, 105, 130, 160). Jesus says that God’s word is spiritual food that must be constantly consumed (Matthew 4:4). Are we doing this?
    • We can’t neglect daily prayer (1 Thessalonians 5:17). For any relationship to work, the communication can’t be one-sided. God speaks to us through His word, but we speak to Him through prayer.
  • For those who struggle with these things …
    • Think about King David (Psalm 5:1-3; 63:6; 119:148).
    • Think about Jesus (Matthew 14:22-23; Mark 1:35; Luke 5:15-16; 6:12).
  • When we stop and consider all we do make time to do, maybe we will discover that our problem has more to do with priorities than a lack of time (Matthew 6:33).

By making time to do spiritual things with your children

  • What did you do with your children last week?
    • Did you go to the movies with them?
    • Did you play sports with them?
  • Did you make time to do the things that really matter with them?
    • Did you do spiritual things with them?
    • We have a responsibility to do this (Ephesians 6:4; Deuteronomy 6:4).

By making time to serve others

  • Jesus always made time to do this (Acts 10:38).
  • We must strive to be like Jesus (Galatians 6:1-2; 1 Thessalonians 5:14; 1 Peter 4:9). This also includes making time to seek the lost (Luke 19:10; Matthew 28:19).

Conclusion: Do you need to make time to obey the gospel? There is nothing better in this world that you could use your time for!
