In our readings through the New Testament, I have been impressed by the prayer life of Jesus. Prayer played a massive role in the life of the Savior.

Jesus prayed all the time.

  • Jesus regularly got away from the crowds and found a secluded place to talk to God (Matthew 14:22-23; Luke 5:15-16).
  • He prayed early in the morning (Mark 1:35).
  • He prayed late into the night (Luke 6:12).
  • If Jesus consistently made time for prayer, how much more so should we? If we are too busy to make time for prayer, then we are too busy! Our lives are clearly out of balance and need to let some things go.

Jesus used prayer for many different purposes.

  • He prayed to offer glory to God (John 17:1-5).
  • He prayed to intercede for others (Luke 22:31-32; 23:34; Matthew 5:44).
  • He prayed to teach (Luke 11:1-4).
  • He prayed to show dependence on His Father (Matthew 26:36-44). Those who understand that they are not self-sufficient will continuously pray to God.

Jesus prayed in faith.

  • We are to have confidence and trust when we pray (Mark 11:22-24).
  • We are to have faith that God is faithful to keep the promises He has made regarding prayer. He will listen to and respond to our prayers (Psalm 34:15). He will give us open doors of opportunity to win the lost (Colossians 4:2-4). He will provide us wisdom and our daily bread (James 1:5; Luke 11:3). He will help us with the struggles we face in our lives (1 Peter 5:6-7).
  • According to the Lord, those who don’t have faith, have no business praying to God.

Conclusion:

Let’s model our prayer lives after the Savior’s!
