Every local church experiences Christians who drift away from the Lord. The Bible warns us of this danger (Hebrews 2:1-4; 3:12; 4:11; 5:11; 10:26-39; 1 Timothy 1:19-20; 4:1-2; 6:10; 1 Corinthians 9:26-27; 2 Peter 2:20-22).

There are several reasons why Christians make the foolish decision of drifting away from the Lord.

Why do Christians drift?

  • They fail to grow spiritually (Hebrews 5:11-12). When we fail to grow in our knowledge of God’s word, we give the devil an avenue into our lives.
  • They fail to have a consistent prayer life. Christians who don’t regularly communicate with God eventually drift away from Him.
  • They fail to associate with their brethren. They rob themselves of the blessings that are found in staying connected (Acts 2:46; Hebrews 10:24-25).
  • They develop hard hearts (Hebrews 3:12). They harden their hearts to the truth of God’s word.
  • They fall into the trap of worldliness (2 Peter 2:20; 2 Timothy 4:10). They begin putting the things of the world before the things of God.

How to Avoid Drifting

  • Commit to spiritual growth (2 Peter 3:18). Regularly read and study your Bible. Seek out opportunities to hear gospel preaching. Take advantage of the many online spiritual tools we have made available.
  • Commit to a consistent prayer life (1 Thessalonians 5:17; Colossians 4:2). Consistently carve out quiet moments to talk with God.
  • Stay connected with your brethren (Hebrews 3:13). Even during a time of social distancing, we have a vast array of ways to encourage one another (ex: social media, email, messaging).
  • Keep a receptive heart towards God’s word (James 1:21). Remember that the Scriptures come from God, and they are the standard by which we will be judged.
  • Always put God first (Matthew 6:33; 10:37; 22:37). Love God more than anyone else because He loved you first (John 3:16).

Conclusion:

God is willing to receive again all of those who have drifted away from Him (Luke 15:11-32).
