Unfortunately, we are living in a time when fewer and fewer people believe that the Bible is literal and the actual word of God. Instead, most view it as a book of myths, legends and fables.
Jesus viewed the scriptures very differently in His life. Jesus viewed the scriptures …
As Inspired of God
- Paul tells us that all of the scriptures are inspired by God (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
- This means that the scriptures come from the mind of God.
- They have been given to us by God. They are not a product of the mind of men.
- Jesus certainly endorsed this in His life.
- In Matthew 15:3-6, the Lord referred to the writings of Moses in Exodus as the “commandment of God” and “the word of God.”
- In John 16:12-15, He promised the apostles that the Holy Spirit would come and reveal to them all the truth.
As Worthy of Study
- Jesus pointed this out to the Sadducees when correcting their erroneous view of the resurrection (Matthew 22:29-33).
- Sadly, many are lost right now because they have failed to read and study God’s word.
As Extremely Useful
- How did Jesus use the scriptures in His life?
- He used them to successfully battle against the devil (Matthew 4:1-11).
- He used them to answer questions and correct error (Matthew 19:3-6; 22:29-33).
- He used them to teach the truth about His identity (Luke 7:21-23).
- We need to use God’s word to accomplish the same purposes in our lives!
As Historically Accurate
- Jesus made reference to…
- The creation (Matthew 19:4-6).
- Noah and the flood (Matthew 24:37-38).
- Jonah in the belly of the fish (Matthew 12:39-40).
- Lot’s wife (Luke 17:32).
- Naaman being cleansed of leprosy (Luke 4:27).
- Since Jesus was raised from the dead, we can trust that the great stories found in the Old Testament really happened!
As Necessary for Us to Obey
- Careful obedience to God’s word was important to Jesus (Matthew 23:23-24; John 8:55).
- He expects it to also be important to us (John 14:15, 21; 15:13-14; Matthew 7:21).
Conclusion: Do you view the scriptures in the same way as Jesus did?
