Chapter 9 Summary

  • This chapter continues discussing the topic of the new covenant instituted by Jesus.
  • Hebrews 9:1-10 provide details about the old covenant. The old covenant was ordained by God and was glorious while in force.
  • While the old covenant tabernacle was earthly, it did contain “regulations of divine worship” (Hebrews 9:1). The specifics of this worship system are described in Hebrews 9:2-10.
  • The worship pattern under the old covenant was a shadow of what would take place under the new (Hebrews 9:9). As glorious as it was, the old covenant was not sufficient in bringing men unto God. God always intended that it be a temporary arrangement until the work of Jesus was completed (Hebrews 9:10).
  • Hebrews 9:11-14 speak of the superiority of Jesus’ ministry (in comparison to the ministry of the high priests under the Law). Unlike the high priests under the Law, Jesus did not enter into an earthly tabernacle. Instead, He entered the heavenly tabernacle. Jesus did not offer bulls and goats. Instead, He offered Himself once for all!
  • Hebrews 9:15-28 answer the question of, “Why did Jesus have to die?” Jesus died to institute the new covenant (Hebrews 9:15-22), and to put away sin (Hebrews 9:23-28).
