A brief review of chapter 1:

  • Jesus is superior to the Old Testament prophets (Hebrews 1:1-3). He is the supreme spokesman!
  • Jesus is superior to angels (Hebrews 1:4-13). Unlike angels, Jesus is the Son of God, worthy of worship, and has been exalted to the right hand of God.
  • Angels are “ministering spirits.” They minister to God’s people today!

Chapter 2:

  • The salvation of Christians is described as a “great salvation” (Hebrews 2:3). Make a list of some specific things that make our salvation great.
  • Christians can forfeit their great salvation if they drift away from the teachings of Jesus (Hebrews 2:1-2).
  • The gospel message was both revealed and confirmed (through various miracles) by God’s messengers (Hebrews 2:3-4).
  • Even though Jesus is far superior to angels, He came in a form that was lower than angels (vs. 5-8). He was made this way so He could die for our sins (Hebrews 2:9; Philippians 2:8).
  • The sufferings of Jesus were designed to make Him a “perfect” Savior (Hebrews 2:10). Through Jesus’ sufferings and death, we are able to become His brethren (Hebrews 2:11-13), death was rendered powerless (Hebrews 2:14-15), and He was able to become a merciful and faithful High Priest (Hebrews 2:16-18).
  • Jesus is the perfect High Priest because He knows exactly what it is like to be a man. He was tempted in every way and did not succumb to sin. He can truly sympathize with our weaknesses.
